What kind of screw should I use to mount this onto the stubs? It does not come with hardware...

I used two short LAG bolts. Yes, it may be too much but it is solid and I have used it a lot since I got it. I am sure solid screws would work but I installed it permanently and short (1-inch) lag bolts hold it perfectly. Something with a good thread size.

Can I detach the mounting piece and attach the unit one the mount is up on my ceiling?

The bracket that is mounted to the reel slides into the mounting plate that you attached to the wall or ceiling. As long as you have room on the side you slide the reel out of the bracket, you can remove the reel.

Very pleased

I just installed this reel to replace one from a different mfg. that no longer retracts or has power at the plug. I can't speak to longevity but I have three other reels like this from different manufacturers. My initial impression is that it is of good quality and is as good or better than my other cord reels. I added a steel ring and mounted mine from the bracket my previous reel used. It does come with a good solid mounting bracket. So far I am pleased.
